This brick patio with the fireplace and built-in seating created one of my favorite “rooms” in the movie. They wanted the “Home Again” interiors to have a mix of rustic, Midcentury and bohemian influences. I took as many screenshots of the house as I could while watching the movie. The movie’s about Alice , who recently left her husband and moved into her late father’s home with her girls.
“Most people who live on the street love it, and think it’s a lot of fun,” one nearby resident said in 2019. “It was a big deal having the movie filmed here, and it’s still a big deal. Any time I’m walking by that house, I see someone out in front, taking pictures.” As you can imagine, traffic picks up during the Christmas season when the movie takes place. For movie fans, the brick suburban residence featured in the 1990 movie Home Alone is almost as familiar as Macaulay Culkin's adorable mug from the beloved holiday flick. As the three stay in the house, they all become an important part of Alice's routine, as she develops a potential romantic interest in Harry while Teddy helps her set up a web site for her business. George encourages Isabel to enter a script-writing contest at school as part of an effort to pursue her own literary aspirations, with Isabel coming to rely on George for emotional support to deal with anxiety issues when it comes to her writing.

I know I’m late to the party, but I watched Home Again on my flight back from Japan yesterday and found myself longing to live on the movie set. I feel as though I’ve spent my whole adult life resisting moving back to California (can’t wait to see Lady Birdwhen it comes out here…) but when I see interiors like those in the movie, I think it’s time to give in and head home. The film was written and directed by Hallie Meyers-Shyer, daughter of beloved director Nancy Meyers (Something’s Gotta Give, It’s Complicated, The Holiday…). Filmed in a 1929 Spanish-style hacienda in Brentwood, the Home Again decor is impossibly chic.

Hughes returned time and time again to the North Shore area of Illinois for his films; he thought of all his characters as living in the same universe, but Shermer was special. In North America, Home Again was released alongside It, and was projected to gross $10–12 million from 2,940 theaters in its opening weekend. It made $300,000 from Thursday night previews and $3.1 million on its first day. It went on to debut to $8.6 million, finishing second at the box office, behind It ($123.4 million).
We were on a limited budget, but Hallie knew that she wanted a very light and bright feel to the place. As the film became popular, people started to park nearby and snap pictures. There’s a scene in the film where Kevin tells “Santa” that he lives at 671 Lincoln Boulevard, the home's actual address (although it's technically 671 Lincoln Avenue); it was easy enough to find from there. "Many Christmases ago, the McCallisters went to Paris–well, most of us," the listing reads. "Though we’re older and wiser now (I’ve even got my own security firm), we’re never too old for holiday hijinks. So while we’re away on vacation , I’m inviting one crew of mischief makers to let their inner 8-year-olds run free in my childhood home." In December 2021,Airbnb listed a one-night stay in the actual Home Alone house.

Shermer was a fictional Chicago suburb of a type that was very familiar to Hughes. That’s in large part because, as a child, the Hughes family moved to the Chicago suburb of Northbrook, Illinois; he met his wife at Glenbrook High School. His teen years in Northbrook shaped his personal life and his professional writing, largely because of what a diverse group of people existed there. Unfortunately, that was a one-time-only event and the house is not available for regular rentals. In September 2016, Open Road Films acquired distribution rights to the film. Life for a single mom in Los Angeles takes an unexpected turn when she allows three young guys to move in with her.
At first, the location manager expressed interest in using their Winnetka home for the Hughes film Uncle Buck, but that didn’t work out. Over a year passed before the Abendshiens were asked to use the house for Home Alone. “We would have not believed back then that there would be sightseers coming to look at that house for years afterward,”John Abendshien told Vanity Fair in 2020. I particularly love Rom-Coms and have been disappointed that they have fallen out of favor over the last decade or so. Some of my favorite movies are cheesy Rom-Coms; Never Been Kissed, 13 Going on 30, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, The Holiday and even Ghost of Girlfriends Past. Coldwell BankerIf you’ve ever revisited the Home Alone films for a dose of nostalgia, you probably asked yourself at some point “how much is the Home Alone house worth?
Fans of the sitcom were quick to notice that the street views seen through the windows of the fictional couple’s New York suburb home looked eerily like the Home Alone house. Reportedly, one fan included the Abendshien daughter, who recognized the views from the Geller-Bing household as the ones she was seeing from her own house. Zillow estimates that today, the property is valued at a cool $2 million or so, while Realtor.com estimates that the house on Lincoln Avenue is worth about $1.942 million. In 2012, the Abendshiens, empty nesters at that point, sold the Winnetka house for a reported $1.585 million. Understandably, the current owners don’t want to be that vocal about their ownership of one of the most popular houses in the country and haven’t been seen on camera.
The interiors were the mastermind of the film’s production designer, Ellen Brill, and set decorator, Nicole Cates. It’s no surprise Los Angeles-based designer Mark D. Sikesalso weighed in . Below, I’ve rounded up some inspiring images of the film’s set and shared my suggestions on how you can get the look.
